Did the Cards Over or Under perform?
I think I picked 75 wins so they over performed on the whole but that was one ugly pennant retreat.

I think they performed about as expected. Mo has it set up to play for the WC. He has no intentions of winning the Central.

I don't really know enough to form an opinion on Mo but I'm pretty sure that the problem isn't Shildt. He and the players really turned things around but they just really didn't have the tools in the end. The lack of a set closer really hurt down the stretch as did relying on a bunch of rookie starters to carry us through the stretch. Combine that with the worst defense I've ever seen and your season just fizzles out.
As far as defense goes, it could be that Oquendo isn't really into it like he used to be. Didn't he quit for a while and then kind of get dragged back into it?
Maybe they need to hire a new defense coach.
But in the end, I think you're right. We were set up to contend and that's what we did for as long as we could.
But I'm afraid of what we will get if we replace Mo.

Oquendo cant turn turds into great defenders. Dejong is passable at SS but would probably be a legit defensive 3B. Wong is a good defender but can barely hit his weight. Carp can handle 1B well enough but we cant give him 2 months each year to figure stuff out. Fowler is awful all the way around, and Gyorko isnt a starter. Bader is a great defender but he is probably gonna be a .250 .260 guy who doesnt get on base a ton. Ozuna is gonna be a good piece but he sure looked shaky in the OF this year for a guy who won a GG.
Have to trade Oniell, Martinez, Gyorko, and Fowler. May have to DFA Fowler. Use some of the young pitching and those guys to find a 3B worth a dam. I am not real concerned with the closer as they are a dime a dozen usually. Just need to find somebody who can be consistent.

I'd rather move Dejong to 3B and look for a SS.
I wonder about how Gyorko would do as a starter at 3B. He has hit very well in part-timing for us. Maybe if he knew he was going to get his chance every day he would hit better.
We were both way wrong about J. Martinez and Mikolas. I thought that Martinez would get figured out by June and be hitting about .100 lower in the second half but he held it together.
I also thought that big leaguers were going to hit Mikolas big looper but he can bring a 95 mph fast ball that looks just the same until it leaves his hand.

Moving Dejong to 3B and getting a good SS would work. Hopefully they sign Machoado but i am not holding my breath.
I still think Mikolas is a flash in the pan but we will see. I never worried too much about Martinez and his bat I just didnt want him anywhere near a glove, and still dont.

As good as he is, I'm a little concerned about Manny's attitude. He's shone some bad behavior that might really hurt a team some day.

Plus there's no way we're gonna pay up what he will want.
I think (depending on the post season) Manny stays in LA.

LA or NY would be my guess.

He'll be happy in either as long as he's playing well. But Yankee fans are not very forgiving of poor play and Manny might not like some of the things they have to say if he underperforms.

They are happy with how Manny fit in with the club, but don't seem to be overly thrilled with his performance. Manny is gonna get paid, but this off season is a pretty big audition for him.

It seems to me that the best way to judge whether Waino would be effective as closer is to look at his stats in the first inning.

Well if he is just throwing 1 inning he would be able to just cut it loose. First inning of a start he isnt going to be trying to throw as hard as possible.

True, but as you age it's harder to go from on call to wide open in an instant.
