Religion- a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith.
My point regarding Sam's education is that here is a guy with a PhD in neuroscience, but all he can talk about is religion and his understanding of religion is lacking. I guess there is no money/audience in Neuroscience debates and books.

Anyone that believes in the literal scriptural hell from the Bible is an extremist. Hell can mean anything. I believe trying to have a rational discussion with you can be hell, but I am not a fundamentalist. I come from a long, long, loooooooooooooooong line of extremists. Just sayin. I'll kindly butt out... If your "line" believes that if you do not accept Jesus as your savior, "they will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." Then yes, you come from a line of extremists and certainly not moderates.

On the old message board Stan the Man had more formal education than most anyone on that board. But he didn't have the ability to think with concision. Attending many classes will not make you a genius. Superior cognitive abilities are something certain people are born with. You are not one of those people. My cognitive abilitity and capacity for a abstract thought is quite high; otherwise I could not Compete in my profession, which I do quite well. So well, in fact, it affords me the time to come on here and try to teach you heathens. Here again, you have lost another debate so you resort to a barrage of ad hominem attacks, red herring and straw men fallacies ad nauseam. Here's the deal: Sam Harris is not that intelligent about religion. I don't know why this fact upsets you so much. He simply is not enlightened regarding any religion other than his own.

Wax on and and display your hermeneutical skills, brother!

Wax on and and display your hermeneutical skills, brother! I was raised moderate. I rebelled and became a sold out fundie determined to prove that God existed just like the scriptures stated... but it did not work out. All of my family is moderate. I was the only black sheep. Now I am... well... this. Now I live in the heart of fundyland. We have a 60' praying hands that will creep you the &%$ out of you. We have a natural history museum that does not date the prehistoric artifacts. I lost a job because of my political beliefs. The religious environment here is oppressive, but I hang out with my wife's prof friends and allow a few more into my survival bubble. I do my work, love my kids and grandkids, take care of my puppy dogs, and try to teach Bert something now and then, but he resists. I am patient though.

My point regarding Sam's education is that here is a guy with a PhD in neuroscience, but all he can talk about is religion I love that this is your point. It shows that you don't know what you are talking about. Check out his podcast. Loads of neuroscience discussions and debates. You have read one book and Reza's Twitter feed and a few other sources out of context. Yet it is clear to anyone that is very familiar with Sam's work that you are not. So why would I want to debate you on a topic you are unprepared for? Listen to his podcasts. Do us both a favour. Listen.

You have no idea what I have read and what I have listened to. I only read one book because I have been debating one of his disciples for years and that one was all I could stomach.I have listen and read all I am going to. I have listened to most, if not all of 10-20 debates.
Sam Harris is not one of the great minds of our generation. I gave you several reasons and examples that you summarily dismissed as "Reza's twitter feed". I gave you the sources for these comments and Reza's twitter feed was not one of them. The only reason Reza Aslan even came up was because I asked if you had seen any of the debates where Reza dismantled Sam on topics of religion.
Just because Sam's unsophisticated view of religion resonates with your own preconceived notions does not make it correct. Sam is simply one of the founders of this new atheist religion. I'm sure he has a bigass house because of it, but that does not make him a "great mind". Donald Trump has a bigass house too.
Have you read David Chalmers', "The Conscious Mind"? This is the caliber of person that belongs in great minds of our age category.

I have listen and read all I am going to. Glad to see you still have an open mind. You sound like a fundamentalist.

I do have an open mind. I am glad that Sam relented, somewhat, on his ridiculous stance against religion. I have my own heros.
Regarding religion, the vast majority of my friends are atheists, most of them are just not evangelical atheists. I am nonreligious.

Atheism is not a system of beliefs. If you were to use set theory and take the set of all theistic systems of beliefs held by faith, atheism would be the null set.

The commitment to non belief in God requires belief there is no God. Every non belief without proof, requires a belief.
Likewise belief in God requires a non belief in atheism.
The only true non belief is noncommittal.

List every god and ask if I believe in it and I will tell you "no". That is not belief, it is the absence of belief.
You are saying the empty set contains something, and that is not true. It contains nothing by definition.
Being non-comittal has nothing to do with it.
Logically, your premise makes no sense. You say that not to believe means you believe. Replace believe with another verb and see if it makes sense. Not to swim means to swim. Not to eat means to eat. Not to look means to look. Not to kill means to kill....
All those are nonsense, just like your premise.
