Can we just start choosing other amendments we don't really care for? Worked well with the 18th amendment. The 2nd amendment is the fons et origo of one of our biggest problems. Getting rid of it and passing tough legislation creates new problems, but they are problems worthy of a solution. |

My biggest issue with a gun ban is it's basically removing the second amendment, and most will claim it's old and outdated. Can we just start choosing other amendments we don't really care for? WTF do you think an amendment is? It only takes 2/3 vote of congress to create a constitutional amendment and that amendment in effect can be the repeal of a previous amendment (e.g. 18th amendment repeal). American Government 101 |

Militias are irrelevant in modern society (despite the ravings of the compound crazies). There was no standing army when the second amendment was ratified.
The typical musket of 1791 had a one-round magazine capacity, and it could fire around three effective rounds per minute. It's maximum accuracy range had to be within 150 feet. Compared to a modern-day AR-15, which has a magazine capacity of up to 100 rounds, has an effective fire of 45 rounds a minute (without mods) , and an accuracy range of 1650 feet.
To suggest that the second amendment is in place to defend against st a tyrannical government is a ridiculous notion too. The us military could obliterate the state of Idaho from a van on Pennsylvania Avenue.

How do you propose to get rid of several hundred million guns that are for the most part in that hands of law-abiding citizens who don't want to give them up? Walter had an idea that has promise if anybody that counts is looking at it. He said that gun owners should be required to carry insurance and held responsible for everything that happened with their gun. I'm not sure if he thought it through to the part where it would require gun registration but I still think it might be a good idea. -walter rarely thinks anything through. I do agree with this concept. And that is not being reactionary and it is a small measure but might effective. |
